ARTICLE Social Stigma and the COVID-19 Pandemic
ABSTRACT Social stigma can be defined as ‘social rejection resulting from perceived negative characteristics.’ Social stigma is an important issue that negatively affects social and mental processes and has undesirable consequences. The chaotic environment that emerged due to the COVID-19 Global Epidemic has caused many people to be stigmatized. Especially the patients, the elderly, those who travel abroad, health workers, some countries/nations, and even celebrities have become the target of social stigma. Fear of stigma can cause negative consequences such as not wanting to receive treatment—especially in an epidemic when people become more fragile.
