The Role of Arginine in the Pathophysiology of Non-Communicable Diseases

"Noncommunicable diseases (NCD)”, most of them are chronic diseases, are responsible for 41 million deaths each year, accounting for 71% of deaths worldwide. In Turkey, the death rate from NCDs is 89% in 2020, with cardiovascular diseases (36.8%), tumors (18.4%) and respiratory system diseases (12.9%) forming the first three causes of death. High mortality rates make NCDs a global concern.

Evaluation of the Effect of Direct Connection Feature of Hearing Aids on Speech Comprehension

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the benefit of the direct connection feature of unilateral or bilateral hearing aids on auditory comprehension skills in noisy environments. Materials and Methods: Twenty individuals with moderate sensorineural hearing loss, aged 18-85 years, without any cognitive, sensory or neurological problems, participated in the study. Speech discrimination scores of individuals with hearing loss exposed to a noisy environment were compared according to the variable of using unilateral or bilateral hearing aids with direct connection feature.

Prospective Comparison of Continuous and Intermittent Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring in Thyroid Surgery

Aim: As technology progresses further in medicine, intraoperative neuro-monitorization has become a powerful safety tool especially for thyroid surgeries. The effectiveness of intermittent or continuous intraoperative nerve monitorization (IONM) on reducing recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy has been a highly debated issue to ensure that RLN does not get damaged regardless of the surgeon's experience level. In this prospective study we compared continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring (C-IONM) with intermittent intraoperative nerve monitoring (I-IONM) for prevention of iatrogenic RLN palsy due thyroidectomy.

Static and Dynamic Investigation of Plantar Pressure Distributions in Gymnasts

Aim: Functionally, running foot undertakes many tasks during walking and is also important in sports branches. Different foot press techniques and different sportive movements in sports branches can affect the normal foot pressure. Studies have shown that gymnastics athletes have leg area symmetry, it has been reported that medial arches are high in relation to foot pressure and may vary depending on age and year of doing sports. The aim of this study is to reveal the plantar pressure distributions with static and dynamic pedobarographic measurements in right-dominant athletes who have been doing gymnastics for more than two years and to give an idea about the foot pressure.

Clinical and Histopathological Findings in Elderly Breast Cancer Patients: Single Center Results

Aim: In the literature, there are clinical and histopathological differences in elderly breast cancer patients compared to younger patients. In our study, we compared elderly breast cancer patients treated in our hospital with younger patients in terms of clinical and histopathological features. Material and Methods: In our study, the results of breast cancer patients treated between 01.01.2018 and 31.07.2021, Sancaktepe Martyr Prof. Dr. İlhan Varank Training and Research Hospital was evaluated retrospectively after the approval of the Ethics Committee dated 27/10/2021 and numbered 2021-1999. The clinical features, histopathological findings and surgical treatment methods of the patients were evaluated from their personal files. The patients were evaluated by dividing them into young and old patient groups, and 65 years was determined as the threshold value for the separation of young and old patients.

A Rare Variation of the Brachial Plexus Involving The Trunks and Cords: A Case Report

Anatomical variations of the brachial plexus are common. This study presents a case of brachial plexus detected during a cadaver dissection. During routine dissections at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University, a variation in the formation and distribution of the left brachial plexus was found in a 74-year-old female cadaver. In this case, the roots of the C5 and C6 spinal nerves fuse to form the superior trunk.
